Up: Film Review

Review by Matthew Pattinson, from Grimsby, Lincolnshire, UK, on 06-Aug-2010When it comes to cinema, buzzwords such as ‘breathtaking’ and ‘genius’ are batted around all too freely. Oscar buzz, awards nominations, and sequels just seem to be part of the course for films that are favourably received or turn a profit.
In the case of Pixar’s latest offering Up, all the above catchphrases apply.
Now don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying Pixar is infallible. Cars proved to be little more that a formula driven vehicle and while the opening of Wall-E was sensational, things went downhill from there.
Yet with its latest film, Pixar reaches new heights and taps into the charm and beauty of golden-era Disney animation.
So what’s it all about….?
Up opens with a stunning dialogue-free sequence that traces the progression of Carl and Ellie from childhood to old age.
Laughter, sorrow, and moments of breathtaking beauty ensue as we see the trappings of life thwart the couple’s dream of exploring the legendary Paradise Falls.
After the passing of his wife, Carl resolves to honour her memory by tying thousands of multi-coloured balloons to th...

US CO2: A BP-Size Leak Every 3 Hours

Editor's Note: This post reveals a new way of visualizing the problem of CO2 emissions in the United States by comparing them to the more-talked-about BP Gulf oil spill. For more on the systemic ramifications of, and solutions to, the oil spill, see Alex Steffen's "Seeing Past the BP Spill."

Official estimates are in for BP's Gulf oil spill: it's pegged at about five million barrels of oil total. That's a mind-bending amount of fossil fuel.

And yet it's not much. Or, at least it's not much compared to what the United States emits in greenhouse gas emissions. In fact, our carbon pollution is so huge that it's like taking that five million barrels of oil, burning every drop of it, and then doing the same thing again every 2 hours and 41 minutes. We do it without stopping. We do it almost 9 times a day; 61 times a week; more than 3,000 times a year.

Fortunately, BP finally put a cap on the ongoing catastrophe in the Gulf. But the US Senate, by contrast...

Unstoppable Trailer

Starring Denzel Washington, Chris Pine and Rosario Dawson, Unstoppable is about a train that can’t slow down and it’s up to a veteran and rookie conductor to stop the train before its freight of hazardous chemicals collides with a town and kills all the innocent people. Directed by Tony Scott, Unstoppable has a schedule release of November 12, 2010.

I don’t know about this one. The trailer is nothing “wow”. The plot is pretty simple and ridiculous. I think this could pass as Speed 3, right? Hopefully there’s more to the film than what we’re just seeing in the trailer. And hopefully, the Washington-Pine duo can improve it. Still, from the look of the trailer, this doesn’t look promising. Is it me, or Washington has a train fetish going on?
You looking forward to this? What do you think of the plot? And what about the cast?

Unstoppable Trailer Starring Denzel Washington and Chris Pine

After directing last year's remake of The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3, Tony Scott is back riding the rails again with a new action thriller called Unstoppable. The concept seems pretty similar to the Keanu Reeves classic Speed, except that there is no Dennis Hopper masterminding the whole operation. In this case, we have a train carrying a cargo of toxic chemicals that accidentally goes out of control, heading straight for a city. The story is supposedly inspired by true events.

Tony Scott has once again chosen to team up with Denzel Washington, playing a heroic working class engineer who takes matters into his own hands. Chris Pine is a young conductor who reluctantly tags along, while Rosario Dawson plays a dispatch operator of some sort. I'm not quite sure how this idea will stretch out over 90 minutes without getting dull, but I certainly trust Tony Scott to smash up a lot of stuff along the way. Unstoppable hits theatres on November 12; check out the trailer after the jump and see what you think.

Update: The Stabbing in Hall H

Ah, social media. Sometimes news spreads before the facts are aligned.
The “stabbing in Hall H” might turn out to be a scuffle between two friends that wound up with one of the men going to the hospital with a “scratch” over his eye.
We’ll keep our eye on the developments; in the meantime, remember: pens are for writing, not stabbing.
