Nicholas Sparks' 'Safe Haven' Finds a Home

Nicholas Sparks' newest novel, Safe Haven, hasn't been published yet -- but plans are already in motion to craft a big screen adaptation. A bidding war broke out over the book -- which was shopped around on Monday afternoon -- and after everything was said and done, Relativity emerged victorious.

Some big name studios were involved in the battle, including Warner Bros., Disney, Sony, and Fox -- and many thought Warners would come out on top considering they've already moved forward with plans to adapt another of Sparks' novels, The Lucky One, which is set to begin filming this fall.

The latest romance from Sparks centers on "a young North Carolina woman determined to avoid forming personal ties until a series of events draws her into two reluctant relationships. As she begins to fall in love, she struggles with a dark secret that still haunts and terrifies her."

New U.S. Attorney Could Spell Changes in Barry Bonds Case

Filed under: A March 2011 trial date for Barry Bonds was set at a status hearing Friday, although the prosecution of baseball's all-time home run champ could be more affected by what took place clear across country hours earlier.

Melinda Haag, a well-respected San Francisco lawyer with a strong grasp of white-collar crime, was unanimously confirmed by the Senate to take over as the U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of California around midnight Thursday. She will likely be sworn into replace Joseph Russoniello no later than early next week, a transition that could change how -- and even if -- Bonds will be tried on charges of perjury and obstruction.

"I would hope she had a different list of priorities," said Victor Conte, founder of Bay Area Lab-Cooperative (BALCO) and one of a dozen people charged as a result of the 2003 raid on the now-defunct supplement company. "I hope she considers corporate fraud, environmental fraud and welfare fraud a higher priority for the taxpayers."
