1 Year, 100 Movies #87 12 Angry Men (1957)

For 1 Year, 100 Movies, contributor/filmmaker Trey Hock is watching all of AFI’s 100 Years, 100 Movies list (compiled in 2007) in one year. His reactions to each film are recorded here twice a week until the year (and list) is up!
So I have started this entry a couple of times, and am still a little unsatisfied. It is hard for me to articulate why a film about twelve men in one room is so emotionally engaging and visually compelling. Each time I start the entry I feel like I’m doing a disservice to “12 Angry Men,” but believe me, this film is great.
So far on the AFI 100 Years, 100 Movies list there have been a couple of films that if changed only slightly would have been slow or boring. Think of “The Last Picture Show” without Cloris Leachman or Ben Johnson or its beautifully con...

1 Year, 100 Movies: 12 Angry Men

In 1957, Sidney Lumet directed a powerful tour de force called “12 Angry Men,” about the entrenched opinions and prejudices of a jury in the deliberation room. Or, as contributor Trey Hock put it in his newest 1 Year, 100 Movies column:
One room, twelve dudes, go.
This is a great entry because Trey gets to dissect a scene from the movie and really get into what makes it tick. If you love movies, and you’re not reading Trey’s journey through the AFI 100 Years, 100 Movies list, you’re missing out. Start now with #87 12 Angry Men (1957).

1 Year, 100 Movies #86 Platoon (1986)

For 1 Year, 100 Movies, contributor/filmmaker Trey Hock is watching all of AFI’s 100 Years, 100 Movies list (compiled in 2007) in one year. His reactions to each film are recorded here twice a week until the year (and list) is up!
Oh I was not ready to go from “12 Angry Men”, a film that could have been preachy and self-righteous but wasn’t, to “Platoon,” a film by the master of ridiculous and melodramatic soapbox grand-standing, Oliver Stone. Oh how I loathe you, Mr. Stone. The best thing about Oliver Stone’s recent anti-Semitic rant is that now more people will see him for the conceited, talentless douche bag that he is.
If you want to make heavy-handed, unsubtle films, then all you need to do is watch “Wall Str...

1 Year, 100 Movies: Oliver Stone’s Platoon

For 1 Year, 100 Movies, contributor/filmmaker Trey Hock is watching all of AFI’s 100 Years, 100 Movies list (compiled in 2007) in one year and writing reactions to each film twice a week until the year (and list) is up!
So far, there has been little hate for any of the AFI movies. That all changes today.
Has Trey been saving up all of his bile for one movie? It seems so. After watching Oliver Stone‘s 1987 Best Picture winner “Platoon,” Trey lets it fly. Have you seen “Platoon”? If so, you may want to ring in with your own opinion here.
Read 1 Year, 100 Movies #86 Platoon (1986).

10 Great Blogs About Growing Food

This week, I thought I'd share some of my favorite blogs about growing food. The great thing about this list is that no matter what kind of climate you garden in, chances are good that at least one of these bloggers is in a similar climate. I love reading about the creative ways gardeners deal with pests, neighbors (sometimes that's the same as pests, though...), weather, and space issues. I hope you find at least a couple of blogs here to add to your feed reader.
