“THE COVE” WINS 3 CINEMA EYE HONORS INCLUDING FEATURE PRIZE
AGNES VARDA NAMED OUTSTANDING DIRECTOR
2 HONORS FOR “BURMA VJ” and “OCTOBER COUNTRY”
“THE SEPTEMBER ISSUE” NAMED AUDIENCE CHOICE
JANUARY 15, 2010 – (New York) The Cinema Eye Honors, celebrating artistic achievement in nonfiction film in 12 categories, were presented tonight at the Times Center in New York City where Louie Psihoyos’ THE COVE – the acclaimed undercover investigation into secret dolphin hunting in Taijii, Japan – was the night’s big winner, receiving three Cinema Eye Honors for Outstanding Nonfiction Feature, Outstanding Production and Outstanding Cinematography.
The third annual event drew a packed house of documentary filmmakers, with presenters including Albert Maysles, Academy Award winners Barbara Kopple and Peter Davis, Ellen Kuras, Amir Bar-Lev and Bill Plympton. The event was hosted by Cinema Eye co-chairs Esther Robinson and AJ Schnack.
Legendary French filmmaker Agnès Varda was awarded the Cinema Eye for Outstanding Direction for THE BEACHES OF AGNES. Her longtime production designer, Franckie Diago, accepted the award on Varda’s behalf.
Anders Østergaard’s BURMA VJ received two awards, Outstanding International Feature and Outstanding Achievement in Editing, as did Michael Palmieri and Donal Mosher’s OCTOBER COUNTRY, which was named Outstanding Debut and received the award for Original Music Score.
RJ Cutler’s behind-the-scenes look at Vogue Magazine, THE SEPTEMBER ISSUE, took the Audience Choice Prize. Jessica Oreck received the first Cinema Eye Spotlight Award for her debut feature, BEETLE QUEEN CONQUERS TOKYO. The Spotlight Award is intended to showcase a film that has not yet received proper attention in the United States.

Ross McElwee’s 1986 documentary classic SHERMAN’S MARCH was presented with the first Cinema Eye Legacy Award. McElwee received his award from two-time Oscar winner Kopple and then discussed the film and his work on stage with Thom Powers, chair of the Cinema Eye Honors Nominations Committee and Documentary Programmer for the Toronto International Film Festival.
The process for selecting the awards began with a list nearly 100 feature length nonfiction films eligible in 2009. The nominees were selected by a panel of documentary programmers from 14 different film festivals in North America and Europe. More than 150 members of the documentary community – filmmakers, distributors, programmers and critics – voted for this year’s Cinema Eye winners. Two categories – Original Music Score and the Spotlight Award – were voted on by a select jury.

Hello there!
I’m the gentleman (and I use that term loosely – eyeing myself over my glasses and everything) that worked with Chris and Jimmy to get this new site up and running. Beyond building websites, I work in the film industry as a producer and writer. I’ll be adding occasional posts to the site about film distribution, overlooked work and general pop culture.
I just wanted to put up a quick post regarding the latest insane entertainment corporation move of the New Year – the Sony Spiderman reboot.
In case you haven’t read/heard about this, Sam Raimi and Tobey Maguire are off the project – and Sony is gleefully looking forward to a grittier reboot of the franchise. Yes – a reboot on a franchise that is less than 10 years old, and only a few years since the last massive (though flawed) blockbuster. I think it’s appalling, weird and a troubling sign of things to come. Salon.com had their film writers toss out some ideas/reactions on where to take things here (you’ll need to sit through an ad) and Scott Mendelson has some great thoughts on it as well.
What do the fiends think? Travesty? Welcome chance for recovery?
One, perhaps, upside is that we could begin to enter a film comic universe full of the endless plot shifts/parallel dimensions/causal paradoxes of actual comics. That’s the best outlook I’ve got.
One man in a Post-Nuclear world.
We’re extremely humbled by the support that The Masters of Cinema Series has received in some of the big year-end best-of-2009 polls that have hit various media within the last few weeks.
Home Cinema Choice magazine in the UK voted MoC “DVD Label of the Year” in their January issue, and singled out our recent Blu-ray and DVD editions of F. W. Murnau’s Sunrise: A Song of Two Humans as the “Best Remastering” of the past year.
We were likewise very honoured to learn that the weekly cultural staple Time Out London had acknowledged our releases of Maurice Pialat’s La Gueule ouverte (which package includes nine other shorter Pialat films!) and Al Reinert’s For All Mankind as the #1 and #2 DVD releases of the year, respectively.
The UK’s Sight & Sound magazine asked numerous contributors to list their best DVDs of 2009, and <a href=“http://www.bfi.org.uk/sightandsound/exclusive/dvdsof2009">over ten of our 2009 releases were chosen here.
Writers for DVDOutsider and DVDTimes also chose a number of our 2009 releases in their end of year roundups.
Our theatrical releases this year have also been mentioned in end of year roundups, Tokyo Sonata by John White at DVDTimes, and Soul Power (second best film of the year) by Jason Solomons at the Guardian (the Soul Power DVD was picked out by the Metro).
Last but certainly not least, the cumulative votes by contributors of the DVDBeaver DVD and Blu-ray of the Year 2009 global poll ranked our release of The Complete Fritz Lang Mabuse Boxset as the #1 worldwide DVD release of the year, and our Blu-ray edition of F. W. Murnau’s Sunrise: A Song of Two Humans as the #1 worldwide Blu-ray release of the year. (Other MoC DVD placings included Antonioni’s Il grido, and Pialat’s La Gueule ouverte and Nous ne vieillirons pas ensemble as numbers 8, 12, and 18 best of the year respectively, while our edition of Kiyoshi Kurosawa’s Tokyo Sonata garnered mention as the #17 best Blu-ray of the year — alongside nods to superlative releases from our friends at Criterion, BFI, Second Run, and Artificial Eye, among others). In the same poll, The MoC Series was also recognised for “Best Cover Design” for our Complete Fritz Lang Mabuse Boxset; “Best Audio Commentary” for the great David Kalat’s work on our editions of the three Mabuse films and F. W. Murnau’s Die Finanzen des Grossherzogs; and “Best Extras” in the way of the short films by Pialat which accompany the La Gueule ouverte release, and the 80-page book that accompanies our edition of Jean-Luc Godard’s Une femme mariée, fragments d’un film tourné en 1964 en noir et blanc (which book will also accompany the Blu-ray edition out this month).
Among such commendations we stand flabbergastedly grateful — to our supporters and all of our collaborators. We promise our fans a tremendously exciting 2010 and beyond. Our 80th anniversary Blu-ray of Murnau’s City Girl has given us goosebumps, and we can’t wait to share it. A wonderful way to kick off the new decade, in glorious 1080p…

Von Jascheroff über 'Leroy'
At its core, "Bitch Slap" follows three bad girls (a down-and-out stripper, a drug-running killer and a corporate powerbroker) as they arrive at a remote desert hideaway to extort and steal $200 Million in diamonds from a ruthless underworld kingpin. Things quickly spin out of control as allegiances change, truths are revealed, other criminals arrive for the score, the fate of the world hangs in the balance and they are forced to confront a villain much worse than they ever expected... themselves. It's the ultimate morality tale as, one by one, they realize the whole she-bang was a set-up and one of them may not even be human...
God loses faith in humanity and sends his legion of angels to wipe out the human race for the second time. Mankind's only hope lies in a group of misfits holed up in a diner in the desert who are aided by the archangel Michael.
The drama revolves around a lone hero who fights his way across the wasteland of post-apocalyptic America. He's the protector of a sacred book that may hold the key to saving humanity.
Two-time Academy Award nominee® Ethan Hawke plays Ed, a researcher in the year 2017, in which an unknown plague has transformed the world's population into vampires. As the human population nears extinction, vampires must capture and farm every remaining human, or find a blood substitute before time runs out. However, a covert group of vampires makes a remarkable discovery, one which has the power to save the human race.
"Edge of Darkness" centers on a veteran cop (Gibson) whose only grown-up child (Novakovic) is murdered on the steps of his home. The cop unearths his daughter's secret life and discovers a world of corporate cover-ups and government collusion. Huston takes on the role of a shady businessman while Roberts will play the role of the daughter's distraught boy
"The Rock" will star as an ordinary man who's brought in to try to save the tooth fairy kingdom.
Tedd Miller sent me an email in the early days of 2009, asking what he should do if a mad scientist moved into his neighborhood. I hope that I am not too late with my answer. Tedd, if you already have tentacles growing out of your cat, it's not too late. If the tentacles are growing out of you, then I'm too late.
Updated review. The reason you should watch this movie is that it features a large, killer, mutant cat monster that somehow hides inside of a normal-sized house cat host.

British teens crash their sailboat on a haunted island with a abandoned hotel. The maid service disappears, ghosts mysteriously turned down their beds, and there's creepy peeping toms. Pretty much your typical Motel 6.
The basic premise of “Up in the Air” is that a person needs a family, at least some kind of permanence, in order to be truly happy. This is, of course, a giant, heaping pile of shit. It’s the kind of pile of shit we get in America because single people don’t spend as much money on greeting cards and gifts and strollers, so we need to make them feel like complete losers for it.
George Clooney plays Ryan Bingham, a professional human resources guy who flies around the country firing people. He spends something like 320 days out of the year on the road, has no personal life to speak of, and dreams of the day he hits 10 million frequent flyer miles.
First of all, the filmmakers undercut the idea of the happy, single person by handcuffing Ryan with a job so crappy that even a vindictive misanthrope would have trouble sleeping at night and not questioning the meaning of his existence. I mean, what the hell else is Ryan going to do except have some kind of personal values crisis?
The giant, fucked up metaphor in the film is an empty backpack, which is such a giant, glowing piece of elementary school symbolism that I wanted to express my outrage by dressing up like Barney, setting myself on fire, and running through the theater. Ryan gives little presentations throughout the country using the backpack as a symbol for how we all have too many possessions. Obviously, somebody with that narrow a view of existence is going to eventually look at that backpack and wonder where the fuck his intellect went.
Intellectual conflict is created by the arrival of Natalie Keener (Anna Kendrick) at Ryan’s company. Natalie has the idea that people could more easily be fired via the Internet than in person, thereby saving the company millions of dollars. It’s an idea with legs. Except that Ryan hates it. Natalie is the sort of recent business school graduate who’s so long on theoretical knowledge and so short on real-world experience that it’s a miracle she can get to work without urinating all over pant suit out of fear. Ryan believes that the personal touch is essential to his line of work and they set off on the road so Ryan can prove it.
Ryan’s emotional conflict comes in the form of Alex Goran (Vera Farmiga), his female comrade-in-arms and fuck buddy. Alex shares all of Ryan’s views about the freedom of the single life and all that jazz and frankly, I saw the resolution of this relationship coming from so far away that I had to book a flight just to get there.
That we even live in a world where firing people via the internet versus firing them in person is actually some kind of acceptable conversation shows the kind of barren emotional and intellectual landscape where this film resides.
